Could Orioles make Peavy trade happen?

Garrett Olson - Evan Brunell

According to Jeff Zrebiec and Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun, (I bet poor Peter got razzed in junior high for that last name) the Baltimore Orioles may be the third team that San Diego Padres' GM Kevin Towers needed in order to ship Jake Peavy to the Chicago Cubs.Towers is looking for young pitchers and hitters in return for Peavy and while the Cubs can offer third base prospect Josh Vitters, they don't have the pitching needed to make the deal on their own.Enter the Orioles, who last year almost matched up with the Cubs on a deal involving second baseman Brian Roberts heading to Chicago for, amongst other things, centerfielder Felix Pie. Club president Andy McPhail acknowledged that the Orioles are looking at Pie as a way to bolster their depth in outfield.Pie, 23, supposed to be the future long-term centerfielder for the Cubs, has struggled these...

Three-team Trade Rumor: Peavy to Cubs, Pie to O's?

The Baltimore Sun has reported a rumorĀ of a three-team deal between the Padres, Orioles, and Cubs, with Baltimore pitcher Garrett Olson (?) going to the Padres and Felix Pie coming to the Orioles.Lemme go ahead and shoot this one down in advance. Look, three-team deals don't happen, particularly not within 50 miles of Peter Angelos. Yes, Manny Ramirez got traded in a three-team deal, in which Manny went to LA; Jason Bay went to the Red Sox; and Brandon Moss, Craig Hansen, Bryan Morris, and Andy LaRoche went to the Pirates. But it was the first three-team blockbuster in years. Here are other recent three-team trades:June 2004: Carlos Beltran to Astros; Octavio Dotel and cash to Athletics; John Buck, Mike Wood, and Mark Teahen to RoyalsJanuary 2003: Orlando Hernandez, Rocky Biddle, Jeff Liefer, and cash to Expos; Bartolo Colon, Jorge Nunez and cash to White Sox; Antonio Osuna and Delvis Lantigua...

Hot Stove Dishes - November 28, 2008

The latest buzz served up from baseball's Hot Stove League.  Ten of the hottest stories, moves and rumors from the past week: Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia -- the L.A. Angels "shell game" continues. The Angels haven't made an offer to Mark Teixeira even though they want him but have floated the idea of offering big money to CC Sabathia -- even though it might be tough to match the Yankees' gigantic offer -- and Teixeira's side has countered.  Teixeira's agent Scott Boras revealed that Teixeira has had offers worth considering.  All of the peripheral talk from the Angels about Sabathia as an alternative target and Teixeira's interest from other clubs stems from a difference in years of service the club is looking to give Teixeira and the 10 years that the slugger is seeking.  You got to love the Hot Stove posturing, don't you? Brian Fuentes wants major cash and K-Rod doesn't want...

Links for 11/18: Peavy, Furcal, Ohman

The Cubs may be out of the Jake Peavy sweepstakes after re-signing Ryan Dempster, and that is not good news for Padres GM Kevin Towers. Corey Brock of MLB.com says that the Towers may look to bring the Braves back into the mix for Peavy. With this news, one has to wonder if Towers' waiting game may backfire. If the Cubs are indeed out of the running, then Towers has lost a lot of leverage in this situation.Peter Gammons of ESPN.com says that Frank Wren still believes his team will end up with Jake Peavy.Mark Bowman of MLB.com quotes Rafael Furcal's agent as saying the shortstop is "shocked and excited" about the Braves' interest in him. If Yunel Escobar ends up being dealt this off-season, it will be interesting to see if Furcal's excitement and ties to the Braves and the Atlanta area lead to any sort of discount for...

Top 50 Free Agents: Rankings and Predictions

Top 50 Free Agents on FireBrand

Last year, on November 6th, 2007, I released my top 50 Free Agents rankings and predictions. This year, a week later than usual, I've again ranked and predicted the destinations for the top 50 free agents of this year's free agent class. 2009 is very top-heavy, and there aren't many sexy names in the bottom 25, but that only made everything that much more unpredictable.

The Deal's Off (For Now)

AJC: After more than a month of negotiations, the Braves have called off their proposed blockbuster deal with the San Diego Padres for 2007 Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy, Braves general manager Frank Wren told the Journal-Constitution on Friday. The Padres wanted too much for the star pitcher, Wren said. "We reached the point where we made the decision that we justĀ didn't feel like there was a deal that we could feel comfortable with," Wren said.Look, the deal wasn't a fait accompli even when it seemed all but inked; I don't think this announcement means the deal is irrevocably off. Jake Peavy's on the block until Kevin Towers succeeds in trading him, and the Braves are still an attractive trading partner -- as long as Towers can temper his demands. In the meantime, the Braves will be pursuing other items on their wish list. Right now, that list appears to...

Hot Stove Dishes - November 14, 2008

The latest buzz served up from baseball's Hot Stove League.  Ten of the hottest stories, moves and rumors from the past week: Yankees out to buy back in to playoffs, offer Sabathia record deal The New York Yankees are tired of missing the playoffs.  The one-year absence has driven them to offer CC Sabathia a six-year, $140-million contract to bring his talent to the Bronx.  The Brewers want to keep Sabathia but can they afford the price of competing with the Yankees in the free agent market.  Better yet, can anyone? Padres go one way with offering Peavy, Braves go the other At some point in the past seven days there was buzz that the Braves and Padres were very close to a deal that would send Padres ace Jake Peavy to Atlanta.  After an entire offseason of talks, the Braves announced that they were calling off their pursuit of...

Towers Shoots Down Potential Deal

Update #4: Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribue talked to Padres GM Kevin Towers who said "at this point in time, I do not see a potential deal with either club."  He of course is speaking about the Braves and Cubs, who were considered the front-runners to land Peavy. Krasovic says that Towers might look to the Yankees and Angels. My guess is that he is just posturing to try and get either the Cubs or Braves to crack and increase their offer and I still expect a deal to one of the two teams to be done tomorrow.Update #3: Rosenthal has a new post in which he says that the Braves will go after free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal if the team acquires Jake Peavy. It sounds more and more like the Braves are intent on trading Yunel since an acquisition like Furcal would pretty much get rid...
